Food in Kuching Part 4: Going back in time

For today's post, it is more indigenous and Malay.

We tried Sago Pancakes in Sarawak Cultural Village. It smells yummy and it tastes best eaten when it's fresh. If not it'll be dry. The pancake is not super sweet. Support the people working there :D And haha, I did not take down the price. Wahahahah... ahahahha..hah (OMG how could you do this to us?!)

Ok it's RM 2. It is not cooked or fried with oil.

Sago Pancake

Since it's the cultural village and this blog is about food, I'll post some pictures showing how the kitchen looks like in those days.

Check out how they store the red spoons int he picture below. It's ingenius for me!

Big pan and big stove and big fire..
Imagine all the embers flying about while you cook! Ouch ouch ouch and smoky.

I think cooking with these kills two birds with one stone.
You cook and get food, and you get a sauna at the same time.

Cherish our modern stoves and ovens :P

Opposite the Cultural Village is the Damai beachfront. They have a food court there where performers from the cultural village eat as well. I ordered Butter Chicken Rice from Stall Number 10 and I was pleasantly surprised that it tasted good.

For dinner, we took a boat across the Kuching waterfront to the restaurant called Barok (or My Village Barok). We were recommended to go there to try the Ayam Penyet. The best description of the restaurant I can give is it's behind a big food court and it's a wooden house. When I first entered, it reminded me of Aunty Juliet's in Kota Kemuning.

In Barok, they have a lot of set menus to choose from. We chose the one with Chinese tofu (they make it really like the Chinese style and good!), pakis cooked with garlic called Midin (green vegetable that we do not have in KL, good too), vegetables (cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms etc), chicken (Ayam Penyet) and rice.

It must be good because the cats there sat beside me on the stool. The waiter had to chase the cat away. Another customer next to us helped too. Everyone was friendly :D even the cats, so no fear.

From top right clockwise: Rice (everybody knows so it's a good starting point XD), Chinese tofu, the bowl of vegetables, pakis called Midin, fish and then the chicken (Ayam Penyet).
The fish was awesome. It was cooked right and smooth. Nyam nyam nyam. Mahu lagi. We ordered siakap fish cooked in sweet and sour sauce.

For drinks, we ordered the Barok Special. In Barok Special, there's Sunkist, lime, lemon, asam boi and lychee. I would describe the taste as refreshing :D

Set Lunch @ Teeq Roof Top, Lot 10 Bukit Bintang KL

Top image: Breakfast set (RM15++) come with free refillable drinks. Although this is available during lunch hour from 12- 2.45pm but it was called as breakfast set. The bacon was a beef in the set.
Bottom image: Beef Burger (RM25++) come with free refillable drinks. All of my friends agree this was the best meal of the whole set lunch because of the juiciness of the beef.

The ambience of the shop and free sky juice in the champagne glass facing KL tower ;D

Top image : Beef Kuay Teow (RM12++) with free refillable drinks. This was the cheapest set offered by Teeq. The beef was given in slice and my friend ordered this for the second time because it was delicious.
Bottom image : Butter fish (RM15++) with free refillable drinks. This tasted so-so only.

I ordered Ice lemon tea (free refill) and every sets come with free bread. You can dip the bread into the olive oil too. Happy hour from 5pm? You can get a cocktail from RM13! I would love to try that if next time I pass by there.

Free refillable drinks from all carbonated drinks (Pepsi, Ice lemon tea and so on). The waitress serve us well and ask us whether want to get a cup of coffee or tea. The picture of the liquor is not free. haha. I have been there twice and the service was as good as Shangri-La Hotel KL and for a very affordable price too.

Food in Kuching Part 3: Foochow Food

For dinner, we had Foochow food in BDC Food Court. My pictures don't do justice to the food but based from what I googled online, a lot of Sarawakians love their Tien Pien Hu, Sarawak Laksa, Tomato Kueh Teow and Kolo Mee.

You've read 3 or 4 in the previous posts so today you get to see Tien Pien Hu.

We ordered 3 dishes to share.

The first dish is Mee Sua. It costs RM 6 a bowl.

Smells and tastes good for me. :)
As you can see, there's chicken and mushrooms.

The second dish is Tien Pien Hu. It costs RM 3.50
I am not familiar with Foochow food so..
There's fishballs, the 'noodle' made form rice starch, veges..
Good for those who don't want a big dish for dinner.

Last but not least, the Kampua! It costs RM 3.50
As I said before, I am not familiar with Foochow food but I think blogpost  (Kampua Mee) explains it better.

For breakfast the next day, we had Sarawak Laksa in Hoojoo Cafe. It costs RM 3.50 for small, RM 4.50 for large.

Kuching Part 2

If you want to read the first part-> Kuching Part 1
If not, you can continue reading this post XD

The next day we had breakfast in Kim Yu Li Cafe at 3rd Mile Pasar. It's opposite Dunlop and Silverstone. Hahaha! That's the best directions I can give.

20130526_091902

We tried Kueh Chap. It's all pork meat. We did not order the ones with internal organs. For small it's RM 4, medium is RM 5 and large (they call it zhen) is RM 6. Obviously we took the small bowl. Those who like Chinese food will like the taste.

For lunch, we had Kolo Mee. I don't know the shop's name but it's at Green Road, near Gosaylak grocery shop. One bowl costs RM 5. Xu Vin suggested that we try the Kolo Mee with pork oil, which gives the red tint on the noodles. It was yummy and filling on a rainy day.

The picture below shows the difference between the noodles with and without the oil.

We also ordered Teh C Ping (Ice Teh C).

We also went to Song Kheng Hai Bazaar.

We ordered:

  • Sotong Kangkung (RM 3.50),
  • Belacan Mihun (RM 3.50),
  • White Lady (a dessert, RM 2),
  • Matterhorn/ Metahorn (a dessert, RM 2)- It sounded like a beer name to me (Beach Life's Cape Horn) but my cousin said it sounded like a name for a Transformers robot.
  • Kong Pia (RM 0.80 each)- sounds like scolding someone, no? :P

For someone who doesn't like sotong and kangkung, Sotong Kangkung is delicious. Not joking here. I don't like sotong and kangkung but I like this dish.

Sotong Kangkung, RM 3.50

Belacan Mihun is nice but because I am not used to belacan, it's going to be biased if I describe any further. Of course it's edible! My cousin and her friend liked it and I ate some of it.

Belacan Mihun, RM 3.50

We ordered two desserts called White Lady and Matterhorn/ Metahorn. Not sure of the spelling for the latter but it sounds like that. Both are good but if I am asked to choose one, I'll go for White Lady.

This is because I am a sweet-tooth, not a sour-tooth (if the word exists!) Matterhorn/ Metahorn has a bit of sourish taste.

Matterhorn/ Metahorn, RM 2

The picture above shows Matterhorn/ Metahorn. I feel like I am introducing a robot, like how they introduced Megatron under the dam. You can see that there are watermelon cubes, cendol, cincau jelly, ice (duh) and lemon. Sour sour.

White  Lady, RM 2

Here comes the White Lady. All bow down please. Ok, now you can stand up. This dessert is more milky and sweet. I like. I like. I like. :D No need to say anymore.

Kong Pia, RM 0.80 each

Last but not least, my new favourite food. Kong Pia! Can tell people off with this word and it's friendly too because it's a name of a food. Nyehehehehe. You Kong Pia! I was told it's a food from Sibu. The one we ordered had pork filling but there are other fillings to such as kaya.

To me, it's similar to Char Siew Pau.

And a last picture to recap what we ate.

Kuching Food Part 1

My cousin and I finally got to explore Kuching! :) We were lucky to have a friend to take us around and acted as our tour guide too.

On the first night, we went to a food court. We had fried radish cakes, fried tofu/ beancurd, Teochew fried oyster (the non-crispy one because we ordered wrongly) and the tomato-based kuey teow soup (mistakenly ordered the kuey teow one but tastes good also) ;D

Here comes the pictures:

20130525_193211
Teochew Fried Oyster (non-crispy)
I had fried oyster like this but it's the crispy one in Kampung Koh, Sitiawan. For those who never had o-chien/ fried oyster like this, it would be special I suppose. The oyster tasted fresh to me.

20130525_193236
Fried tofu/ beancurd
The fried tofu/ beancurd tastes good on its own and with the sauce too.

Tomato-based kuey teow soup

The tomato-based kuey teow soup is good too but not my favourite.

Fried radish cakes

The fried radish cakes can make one feel jelat or full after a few bites but it's good. I recommend this dish for sharing.

Update: Kuching Part 2 is posted too!
